Kitchen of trance

Manila Standard Today, Life & Entertainment | August 22, 2009

Sander came, Sander saw, and Sander conquered the hearts of every clubber present. His point was loud and clear: that night, the Manila dance music scene was his.

Each year, Bigfish brings the famed United Kingdom-based Godskitchen superclub band to the metro via an electronic dance music event. A big room is prepped. Drinks are stocked up. The word is spread. The hottest DJs in the biz are commissioned. For 2009, it was breakout trance artist Sander van Doorn.

On Aug. 14, Van Doorn blew the lid off the A.Venue Events Hall with some of the most intense trance climaxes to rival Tiesto, Van Dyk, and Oakenfold. His sound can be described as a non-stop bombardment of heavenly builds and snares, driven by generous servings of up- and downbeats.

The abrasive synth pattern grows on you, and before you know it, you’re hooked on it, which is exactly why the genre is called trance. His unstoppable energy that kept the ball rolling and it was evident in his forceful manipulation of the turntable. It was love at first sight—or divine intervention—for the trance-thirsty Manila partyphiles.

Johnboy Lee, of course, held his own, spinning track after track of hard-hitting bangers tailor-made for Manila’s toughest crowd. He got the momentum running steady in anticipation of Sander’s set. Our fave boothman, once again, proved that he’s a certified crowd pleaser and with the selection of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs coming up, showed that he should be on that list.

We go to see him control the beats, we listen to his radio show, and we love him. So, let’s make sure he gets that spot. Go to
